Guide for Remote Desktop using OpenVPN on a Company Device

In order to have remote access into the corporate network from a company device you will need to follow the below steps and adhere to all security considerations.

Get Ready

Once your account is ready you will need two things - the OpenVPN Connect client on your computer/laptop and a Two-Factor Authentication client such as Google Authenticator on your mobile device.

Download Google Authenticator

You will need a Two-Factor Authentication client on your mobile device such as Google Authenticator. This is an app that will generate 6 digit codes needed to log in. These codes are constantly changing so there's no need to remember new passwords, but it does provide an extra level of security in case your password is compromised. You may use whatever app you prefer, but Google Authenticator is the simplest:

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.authenticator2&hl=en_CA

iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/google-authenticator/id388497605 or search the app store for "Google Authenticator"

Install the app ready for the next step.

Setup OpenVPN Connect
  1. Visit https://remote.panoramaresort.com/ on a device that isn't your phone and log in with your usual windows username and password. Username is first initial + surname, make sure your username is all lower case.
  2. Your first time logging in you will be shown a prompt to set up Google Authenticator with a QR code. You will use your device's camera to scan the QR code to register it.
  3. Open Google Authenticator. If you are using it for the first time select Begin otherwise use the  icon and select Scan a barcode
  4. Use your phone camera to point at the QR code on the screen. The app will then start generating 6 digit codes every 30 seconds
  5. Enter the current code into the website and select Confirm Code to finish the set up.

Don't delete the app - you will need to use these codes every time you connect to the VPN.
  6. You will then see options to download OpenVPN your connection profile. Select Yourself (user-locked profile)
  7. Once downloaded, double-click on the file to open it. This will open OpenVPN. Click OK in the pop up screen that appears.

Get Connected

In order to access your work computer you first need to use OpenVPN to open up the connection to the resort

  1. Click the shortcut on your desktop or find OpenVPN in your start menu

  2. You should see a window open with a toggle switch next to your profile

  3. Click the toggle to connect. You will need to provide your windows username (first initial + last name, lower case) and password.
You will then be asked for the current Authenticator Code from Google Authenticator.

If the credentials are correct OpenVPN will say CONNECTED and display a graph

  4. You can now work as if you are on resort.

Get Disconnected

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO DISCONNECT YOUR OPENVPN CONNECTION.

Do this by clicking the toggle button in OpenVPN.
This ensures everything runs smoothly for others and is also a security measure to prevent access by unauthorized users.
